Project Background
We have completed another school pool surround in Stonex Quartz Screed supplied by SIDEC in slate colour blend. This time for Bedford Girls’ School.
This project required removal of the existing surface, followed by surface preparation. Drainage is always a key consideration when installing a school pool surface, as standing water can impact on slip resistance, as well as cleanliness. For this project, we incorporated falls from the back wall to the drainage channel using an epoxy mortar.
The Project
This project required a solution that not only looked great but also maximised safety and slip resistance around the pool area.
The installation covered a total area of 132m² and included 74m of coving, providing a seamless, durable surface that ensures a safe environment for students and staff.
Prep Work and Process
Surface Removal and Preparation:
The project began with the removal of the existing pool surround surface. Our team ensured that the underlying area was cleared and levelled to create a stable base for the new installation.
Addressing Drainage:
Proper drainage is essential for school pool surrounds to prevent standing water, which can impact slip resistance and cleanliness. For this project, we incorporated falls from the back wall to the drainage channel using epoxy mortar, effectively guiding water away from the pool area.
Non-Porous Surface Creation:
To make the surface completely non-porous, we applied two coats of Sidec EPG, followed by a final PU matt seal over the Stonex Quartz Screed. This sealing process ensures that water does not penetrate the surface, reducing maintenance and promoting long-term cleanliness.
Maximising Slip Resistance:
We took additional measures to enhance the slip-resistant properties of the pool surround by incorporating polybead into the final seal coat. This added texture provides maximum grip, even in wet conditions, ensuring that students and staff can move safely around the pool area.suring the project remained on track for the critical handover date.
The Result
After 10 working days, our experienced team of five installers successfully completed the installation. The result is a safe, durable, and aesthetically pleasing pool surround that complements the school’s facilities.
